microFIT

If you are a homeowner, farmer or small business owner, you have the opportunity to develop a small or “micro” renewable electricity generation project (10 kilowatts or less in size) on your property. Under the microFIT Program, you will be paid a guaranteed above market price per kW/h for all the electricity your project produces for at least 20 years.

The microFIT program is currently the only government program in North America allowing homeowners and business owners to invest in renewable energy, and guaranteeing a monthly payment for the electricity you produce at a fixed rate which can’t be changed. The rates are designed to cover installation costs, as well as provide a great return on investment.

The rationale for the program is that it is cheaper to encourage consumers to install their own micro-generation capability than to spend billions of dollars replacing the nuclear power stations that may potentially be dangerous.

Each home that micro-generates its own power displaces demand for centrally-produced power. Solar generation is especially valuable as an energy source because it works best during peak periods of energy demand, especially in summer, when air-conditioning units are on.

Over the 20-year term of the contract you will generate up to $100,000 to pay for some of your expenses today, ensure a comfortable retirement, education for your children and grandchildren, all without lifting a finger.

Major part of the program is Domestic Content Requirement. In order to qualify for the government contract, at least 60% of system components must be made in Ontario.

In two years, since the beginning of the program in 2009, the province attracted more than $27 billion in private investments, welcomed more than 30 renewable energy companies (including solar panels and inverters manufacturers) and have created more than 20,000 green-collar jobs with a goal of 50,000 by 2015.

Solar systems generate 13-16% return on investment. That’s more than bonds, GICs, and other guaranteed investment instruments.

The program is a part of the Ontario’s Green Energy Act, and namely one of its goals – to phase out all coal plants in Ontario by 2014, and replace them with renewable energy sources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Isn’t it expensive?
A: You will always be cash flow positive month to month for 20 years. Solar power is a good, secured and government guaranteed investment, that provides double digit returns. Solar power is not an expensive venture, it’s a risk-free investment.
As one of the options, we offer our clients great financing options with TD Canada Trust, RBC and Farm Credit, as well as other banks, in which case you will not pay a cent.

Q: How long does it take to get connected?
A: It takes 4-5 weeks for government approval and 2 weeks for all permits and system installation. You don’t finance the project until it is approved by the government.

Q: What if I plan to sell the house?
A: A microFIT contract holder may choose to move or sell his or her home before the end of the contract term. In this case, the microFIT contract can be assigned to the new homeowner who can take over the contract for the remainder of the contract term. It is also up to you as the owner (with the help of your real estate agent) to determine the value of the microFIT project when your are selling your home.

Q: What happens after 20 years?
A: Your solar panels would still operate at more than 80% efficiency after the 20-year contract expires, which leaves you with an option to renegotiate a new contract with the OPA, or install a battery system to convert your solar panel system to an off-grid setup to offset your hydro bill.

Q: Is it going to break my roof?
A: Every project has to be signed off by a provincial licensed structural engineer in order to get the building permit required to install the system. We design our systems in accordance with building and electrical codes and regulations. All our systems are custom designed to get the best results for your roof exposure.

Q: What about maintenance?
A: Rooftop Solar systems do not have moving parts therefore they do not require any maintenance. Panels have tempered glass with Teflon coating, which means any dust accumulated will be washed away after the first rain. Snow doesn’t stay on panels, because even when they are completely covered with snow, UV rays still heat up the panels, melting the snow.
